One of my deepest concerns is our environment, which starts with the soil. When we began farming ten years ago, it was with livestock; our sheep are moved daily onto fresh pasture, thereby giving the grass a chance to rest and store carbon. The soil is fertilized with their manure, and the combination of these practices means lower parasite counts, healthier soil, and more nutritious grasses, while also preventing invasive species from moving in.
We have taken similar steps to minimise disturbance to the soil in the garden. No-till means microbes and beneficial bacteria have a chance to flourish, while fungi create a vast network of communication, carrying nutrients to areas of need. We use wood chips in our pathways, and not turning over the beds means that there are fewer weed seeds to contend with. It also means better water retention, therefor cutting down on irrigation needs. We do not use pesticides or herbicides on any part of our farm, and believe that the key to living in harmony with insects and other pests that could cause damage is to create greater diversity within our ecosystem…not eliminate it.
When you purchase flowers from our farm, you are making a conscious choice in saying no to conventional grocery store blooms being shipped in refrigerated trucks across countries, or even continents, which adds pollution and emissions to our atmosphere. You are also ensuring a farmer gets paid a fair wage, which cannot be guaranteed when importing flowers.
But, best of all, the quality will be hands down BETTER than what you will find in the grocery store! Your bouquets will last longer because they are fresh!
