The Yarn

Our yarn is made entirely from our animals here on the farm and milled at Moorit Hill Farm, in Troy, Maine…a truly local yarn. My goal when I began with fiber animals ten years ago was to take the stigma out of “farm yarn”; the idea that local yarns were all scratchy and rough. The very first batch of yarn created a sweater that my then 6 year old daughter insisted wearing to bed. It was THAT soft. And we’ve never looked back. We’ve added a few more sheep since then, but we still mostly have Finnsheep (Finnish Landrace) and Cormo (Corriedale/Merino cross), and continue to create blends that are next-to-skin soft!

All our yarns are either natural colors or naturally dyed with plants I grow here on the farm or source from a reputable, sustainable source. We use organic and regenerative practices with our animals, such as daily rotational grazing, we do not vaccinate and deworm with herbs first when necessary, using chemical dewormers only as a last resort. Our flock is entirely grass fed, except immediately after lambing, when they are fed organic, locally sourced grain for a couple of months. (Little known fact…Finnsheep can have up to SEVEN babies at once! Ours typically have three or four at a time, with the occasional set of quintuplets. Because of the high demand on mama, we supplement with grain after lambing to keep her in good condition and producing lots of milk!)
